Founder of Open Briefing
Defender of Those Who Defend Rights
Chris Abbott is a relentless advocate for human rights defenders, ensuring that those on the frontlines of social, environmental, and political justice can continue their work without fear. Recognising the intensifying threats faced by activists—physical, digital, and psychological—he founded Open Briefing in 2011 to provide essential security, intelligence, and protection for those most at risk. Under his leadership, Open Briefing has become a lifeline for activists, journalists, and campaigners worldwide, responding to 575 calls for assistance from organisations and individuals across 100 countries in 2024 alone.
Through holistic security training, digital protection, and crisis support, Open Briefing has helped activists facing intimidation, violence, and legal threats reducing their risks while increasing their resilience and capacity. With over 6,000 hours of direct support and 1,000 defenders trained in 2024, Chris’s work ensures that movements fighting for justice are safer, stronger, and more effective. His unwavering commitment to protecting those who challenge power continues to amplify the voices of those fighting to create a fairer world.
